Sur la mer

She lived by the ocean because
she couldn't bear
to sleep alone.

When the waves moved onto the shore,
she could hear them in her tiny little house,
just footsteps from the beach.

It was as if the ocean was
reaching out to hold her,
and would rock her back to sleep
those time she awoke
gasping for breath, hands outstretched,
reaching for something that was not the sea.
